Meadowbank Syrah 2023

Meadowbank Syrah is a perfumed, medium-weight Syrah from vines up to fifty years old.

Clone tells part of the story here. The 1974 planting is of unknown clone, and it was those vines that supplied the fruit behind the Jimmy Watson-winning Glaetzer-Dixon Mon Pere Shiraz in 2011; alongside them sits a 2015 north-facing block of 6V29W, picked by hand. All the vines root into loose sand and sandstone above dark brown coffee rock, iron oxides and organic matter running through it, farmed organically in practice for twenty years even if not on paper. The 2023 season was steady and reliable, building slowly before warm, sunny days arrived to finish the job.

Perfume is what carries it: violets, pepper and red fruit, with refined tannin set against the acid punch that cool-climate Syrah brings. It is moreishly drinkable. Serve at 16 degrees with roast lamb, charcuterie, or a mushroom tart.
