Description
Meltwater Marlborough Chardonnay is an outstanding-value Chardonnay from a grower vineyard in the Omaka sub-region.
The label is Mike Paterson's second string at Corofin, priced for everyday drinking and made with the same hands-off approach as the wines above it. Fruit came off a sustainably farmed grower vineyard in Omaka, hand-harvested into small bins and pressed as whole bunches. Fermentation ran on indigenous yeast, three-quarters in two and three-year-old French barrels and the balance in a stainless barrel, followed by full malolactic conversion and six to eight months on lees with no stirring. Racked to tank in December and left to settle, it went to bottle unfined and unfiltered in February.
A hedonistic nose of ripe pear, fresh peach and oatmeal, then a taut, chalky palate of nectarine, pear and iodine with real drive. The cleansing saltiness is unmistakably Marlborough. Serve at 12 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled fish, or a wedge of gruyère.
