Meltwater Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Meltwater Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a textured Sauvignon Blanc first made as an export exclusive.

This started life as a wine made only for Mike Paterson's UK importer, which is how it came to be built with more texture and substance than the category usually bothers with. The grapes come off sustainably farmed hill country at the Wairau's southern margin — an unusual address for the variety here, given that the region's Sauvignon is grown almost entirely out on the flats. It was hand-harvested into small bins, fermented on indigenous yeast in tank, and then aged on lees for six months and more across winter.

Punchy and aromatic, with real weight behind the fruit and the lees ageing filling out a palate that stays dry and crisp. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees, no colder. Good with fish tacos, a green salad with feta, or a bowl of pipis.
