Mengoba Godello Viejo Sobre Lías 2021

Mengoba Godello Viejo Sobre Lías is a foudre-fermented Bierzo white drawn from old Godello plots at 550 metres.

Bierzo, in the north-west of Castilla y León, is best known for Mencía, but its old Godello plantings have become the source of some of Spain's most interesting mountain whites. Gregory Pérez's core white is exclusively Godello, selected from 30- to 40-year-old parcels in Cacabelos, Valtuille and Villafranca del Bierzo. Those plots cover a range of soils, from river stones to sandy loam and slate, all sitting at around 550 metres. Fermentation is with wild yeast in wooden foudre, after which the wine spends ten months on fine lees in two 4,000-litre oval wooden vats. The ageing is longer and less reductive than for the estate's younger white, which allows the smoky, mineral character of the slate and calcareous soils to come through more clearly. The finished wine is grapefruity and fleshy in turn, with a powdery, savoury texture and a deep, earthy finish.

Drinking well now and worth keeping five years, it suits grilled fish, roast pork or a mushroom risotto. Serve at 10-12°C.
