Mount Macleod Chardonnay 2022

Mount Macleod Chardonnay is a dry-grown, organically farmed Chardonnay from South Gippsland.

Yields are the number worth knowing here: around 1.5 tonnes to the acre from dry-grown vines, in the fertile Leongatha soils where crops could easily run three times that. Mark Matthews controls them deliberately, and at his prices the arithmetic barely makes sense. The south-facing block sits on well-drained red ferrosol and was certified organic in 2008. This year 5 per cent of the fruit fermented on skins for texture and phenolic tension, the rest pressed as whole bunches. The wine split between concrete, with no malolactic, and barriques of fifteen years or more, with partial malolactic; both rested nine months on unstirred lees.

Punchy citrus, a chalky mid-palate and mouth-watering freshness that runs to a long close. Restrained, dry and quietly serious. Serve at 12 degrees with grilled flathead, roast chicken, or a plate of ricotta and grilled zucchini.
