Murdoch Hill Adelaide Hills Sulky Riesling 2021

Murdoch Hill Adelaide Hills Sulky Riesling is a delicate dry Riesling from Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills.

Macclesfield, at the southern end of the Adelaide Hills, is where this comes from: a small vineyard sitting on an ironstone rock bed, which is a large part of why the wine has such fine bones. Michael Downer handpicks and destems the fruit, then lets it ferment on wild yeast in a 1500-litre foudre, where it sits for two months before moving to tank for another two ahead of bottling. Large old wood and a short elevage, in other words, enough to build a little texture and not enough to blur anything.

Fine-boned and dry, with lime, white blossom and a chalky mineral finish. The acidity is firm and clean, and the wine is quietly persistent. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees with oysters, a crab salad, or salt-and-pepper squid with lemon.
