Murdoch Hill Adelaide Hills Sulky Riesling 2022

Murdoch Hill Adelaide Hills Sulky Riesling is a textural Riesling from twenty-year-old vines in the Adelaide Hills.

Those vines are twenty-plus years old, growing on an ironstone rock-bed in a small, sustainably managed vineyard at Macclesfield in the southern parts of the Adelaide Hills, cooler and later than the more famous northern end of the region. Handpicked and destemmed fruit ferments spontaneously in a 1500-litre foudre for two months, then goes to tank for another two before bottling. Michael Downer uses the foudre for texture, not flavour: it is old, large and neutral, so the wine comes out tasting of the site.

Springtime freshness runs right through it, with apple, florals, a touch of spice and a clean mineral edge, weight that fills the mouth and steely acidity. Cast aside your assumptions about South Australian Riesling. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees with sashimi, roast pork, or a green papaya salad.
