Murdoch Hill Artisan Series Falcon Syrah Pinot 2018

Murdoch Hill Artisan Series Falcon Syrah Pinot is an Adelaide Hills blend of Syrah and Pinot Noir.

Pairing these two grapes is an Australian habit going back well over a century, and its revival in the Hunter and across Victoria has been one of the happier developments of the past decade. Michael Downer's take, made alongside Peter Dredge, runs 70 per cent estate Syrah from Oakbank against 30 per cent Pinot Noir off the Piccadilly Valley, both from vines past twenty years of age. The two were wild-fermented separately in small open vats, then settled into barrique and puncheon with only 8 per cent new wood. Downer describes the aim as marrying the forest character of Ashton Pinot to the slippery, stalk-inflected Syrah grown at home.

Juicy and medium-weight, with raspberry and dark plum, a lick of pepper and a soft line of tannin. Fifteen degrees suits it. Pour it with roast chicken, duck fat potatoes or a plate of charcuterie.
