Murdoch Hill Chardonnay 2021

Murdoch Hill Chardonnay is an Adelaide Hills Chardonnay drawn from high-elevation vineyards.

Three pockets of the Hills feed this wine, at Oakbank, Lobethal and the Piccadilly Valley, all high and all planted to vines averaging more than twenty years. Crops in 2021 were light, enough to concentrate the fruit without gutting the volume, and a mild run to harvest stretched flavour development out while acid stayed put; picking finished at a cool 12.5 per cent. Michael Downer had the bunches picked by hand and pressed whole, then let the juice go to barrel for a wild ferment and ten months in puncheon and barrique, roughly 15 per cent of the wood new.

White peach and grapefruit, a little roasted hazelnut from barrel, and a chalky finish. Tight and driven, more citrus than cream. Serve at 11 degrees alongside roast chicken, scallops or pasta with butter and parmesan.
