Murdoch Hill Landau Syrah 2021

Murdoch Hill Landau Syrah is a cool-climate Adelaide Hills Syrah from one block at Oakbank.

Michael Downer rated 2021 an exceptional year for the estate's Syrah, and the wine carries that confidence. It comes from a single parcel on the Oakbank property, an east-facing slope at 400 metres on shallow red loam over schist with a vein of ironstone running through it, the vines planted in 1998 and worked without herbicide. The style he chases here is the cooler, spicier face of Adelaide Hills Shiraz, buoyancy and lacy shape ahead of weight. Whole bunches and whole berries go into the ferment, and oak stays deliberately quiet: older puncheons and demi-muids, under a tenth of it new, for ten months.

Cool-fruited and spicy, with red and black cherry, crushed pepper and something faintly floral. Fine, lacy tannins and a long, fresh close. Serve at 16 degrees with lamb cutlets, grilled mushrooms or a duck ragù.
