Murdoch Hill Landau Syrah 2022

Murdoch Hill Landau Syrah is an organically grown single-block Syrah from Oakbank in the Adelaide Hills.

Cool weather and steady rain gave the Hills a long, even 2022, and the fruit off this block came in ripe and layered. Landau itself is an east-facing slope at 400 metres on shallow red loam, schist and a seam of ironstone, the vines dating to 1998 and worked on organic principles without herbicide. This is not the dearest wine Michael Downer bottles, though it may be the most representative of him. Twenty per cent whole bunches went into the ferment, and maturation ran ten months in older puncheons and demi-muids with 15 per cent new. Whole berries and restrained wood fill in the detail.

Blue and black fruit, pepper, dried thyme, a graphite edge. Medium-bodied with taut, fine-grained tannin and real length. Serve at 16 degrees. It handles lamb, grilled quail or a dish of lentils and roast capsicum.
