Murdoch Hill Pinot Noir 2023

Murdoch Hill Pinot Noir is a light-bodied Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir.

There was no bottling under this label in 2022, which makes the 2023 a welcome return. Seventy per cent comes from the high, cool Piccadilly Valley sites that have long formed its base, with the balance off Michael Downer's own Lenswood vineyard. The Valley fruit brought perfume, elegance and shape; Lenswood filled it out with spice, weight and depth. Because that Lenswood material already carried plenty of both, whole bunches were pared back to just 5 per cent. Ferment took place in small open-top vats, and the wine rested ten months in barrique and puncheon, a fifth of it new.

Perfumed and spicy, red-fruited and bright, with a core of clean flavour, fine tannin and a mouth-watering close. Serve at 14 degrees, with a short time in the glass. Roast chicken, seared tuna or a wintry mushroom risotto all suit it well.
