Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay 2022

Murdoch Hill Rocket Chardonnay is the top Chardonnay in the range, drawn from high Adelaide Hills sites.

Sixty-five per cent of the 2022 is Lenswood, the family's recently acquired site at 500 metres, home to some of the oldest vines in the district and first planted in 1989. Clone 76 vines put in during 2000 in the western forest block were the ones chosen. The remaining 35 per cent comes from one of the traditional high Piccadilly Valley sources, kept in for continuity of style: Lenswood brings grace and openness, Piccadilly the racier line. Whole-bunch pressed, settled briefly and racked to demi-muid, puncheon and low-toast French barrique at 50 per cent new for nine months, with a full malolactic, then a few months in tank before January bottling.

Dense and layered: fresh citrus, wet stone, a lick of struck-match reduction, grilled nut flavours and a phenolic tug. The finish is powerful and very long. Serve at 12 degrees. Match it with lobster, roast pork or a farmhouse gruyère.
