Murdoch Hill Syrah 2018

Murdoch Hill Syrah is a cool-climate Syrah from the Oakbank vineyard in the Adelaide Hills.

The Cronberry block sits within that vineyard at 420 metres, on a slope facing mostly east and so out of the hardest afternoon sun. Michael Downer describes what it gives as textbook cool-climate Shiraz, fragrant red fruit with pepper and spice, and the block delivers finesse ahead of heft. Fruit was picked by hand and destemmed into open fermenters with 15 per cent whole bunches. Ten months in French oak, a mix of new at 15 per cent and older barrique and puncheon, finished the wine before bottling. Adelaide Hills Shiraz of this shape still surprises people who expect weight from South Australia.

Red cherry and raspberry, black pepper, a little sage. Medium-bodied and fragrant, with fine tannin and a fresh, savoury close that owes more to fruit than to oak. Serve at 16 degrees with roast lamb, grilled sausages or eggplant parmigiana.
