Murdoch Hill Syrah 2020

Murdoch Hill Syrah is a medium-bodied Adelaide Hills Syrah from estate vines at Oakbank.

The Artisan Series tends to collect the attention, though the wines under the plain label are made with the same hand and in much the same mould. This one is estate-grown off the east-facing block planted in 1998 and farmed organically. Wild ferment took place in open-top vats with 15 per cent whole bunches for aromatic lift, and maturation ran mostly in old barrique with 15 per cent new. Michael Downer has been clear that he wants complexity coming from fruit and site, and the oak regime across his reds reflects that position plainly enough.

Dark plum and cherry, cracked pepper, dried herbs. Medium-bodied with a savoury line, supple tannin and a whole-bunch lift on the nose. Serve at 16 degrees with roast duck, moussaka or a plate of grilled lamb cutlets and salsa verde.
