Description
Murdoch Hill Tilbury Chardonnay is an Adelaide Hills Chardonnay led by the estate's Lenswood vineyard.
Lenswood supplies 80 per cent of the 2022, with the usual Piccadilly and Lobethal growers filling out the rest. The Lenswood fruit is open and generous where the other two sites are linear and tight, and that contrast is the point of the blend. Its vines are own-rooted I10V1 planted in 1989 plus Bernard 76 and 95 from the early 2000s. Lobethal, near 500 metres on ironstone, brings flint and drive; Piccadilly mixes sandstone, sandy loam and ironstone. Hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed into French puncheon, barrique and some Stockinger wood at around 40 per cent new, then a full malolactic and light lees stirring over eight months.
Generous stone fruit and citrus held inside a muscular frame, with judged reduction and plenty of malo-derived richness. Precise acid, compact structure, bold length. Serve at 12 degrees. Match it with roast pork belly, lobster or aged comté.
