Murdoch Hill Vis-à-Vis Cabernet Franc 2022

Murdoch Hill Vis-à-Vis Cabernet Franc is a Loire-inspired Adelaide Hills Cabernet Franc.

Five releases in, the Oakbank Cabernet Franc block has earned a further 400 vines, which came online from 2023. The existing vines are spur-pruned on sandy loam flecked with quartz, and the team hand-prunes, thins shoots and thins bunches to hold the crop where it needs to be for the lifted, violet-scented profile Michael Downer wants. Fruit for the 2022 was hand-picked and fully destemmed, then racked to French barrique at 10 per cent new for ten months. Chinon and Bourgueil are the reference points, and this is among the better work under the label.

High-toned and pure, with raspberry, violet and a green-peppercorn snap. Richer in weight than the previous release, balanced and bright. Serve at 15 degrees, slightly below room temperature, with roast chicken, charcuterie or a lentil and mushroom braise.
