Nadeson Collis Millesime 2011

Nadeson Collis Millesime is a vintage Blanc de Blancs made only in exceptional years, from Drumborg Chardonnay.

Ninety-six months on lees is a number almost nobody in Champagne attempts, and it is the defining fact here. The fruit came from Jack and Lois Doeven's cold Drumborg vineyard in a particularly cool year, which heightened the energy the site carries anyway. The cellar approach is the same one used for the still wines: wild barrel ferments, full malolactic conversion, deliberate exposure to oxygen and no sulphur. Ray Nadeson puts it plainly, that the base wine has to be complex because the complexity frames everything that follows. Thirty-six bottles were disgorged, in October 2019.

Floral and savoury, precise, with a striking amount of detail on a long finish. Eight years on lees shows as texture and breadth. Serve at 10 degrees in a white wine glass. Match it with oysters, scallops, roast chicken or aged hard cheese.
