Description

Nathalie Theulot Mercurey Millerandage Rouge is made from a plot of millerandage-affected fruit, where uneven berry set gives small berries and concentrated juice.

Mercurey is the largest of the Côte Chalonnaise appellations and its most serious source of Pinot Noir, grown on clay-limestone slopes south of Chagny. Domaine Theulot Juillot is based in the village and run by Nathalie Theulot with her family. A season of very poor yields led her to approach grower friends to make up volume, and this cuvée came from one such parcel: a south-facing clay-limestone site whose crop was heavily marked by millerandage, known in English as hen and chicken. The winemaking was pitched at delicacy rather than power, with a cold soak, deliberately minimal extraction and only a small proportion of new oak in the élevage, the aim being a red Burgundy open enough to drink from the start. The result is perfumed and red-fruited, with supple tannins carried on bright acidity.

Drinking well now and over the next four or five years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom risotto or a plate of charcuterie.
