Description
Nicole Lamarche Grand Cru Echézeaux is drawn from two lieux-dits totalling one hectare of thirty-year-old vines.
Echézeaux is the largest Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits, spread across eleven lieux-dits in the commune of Flagey-Echézeaux, which makes the grower rather more important than the appellation name. Lamarche's holding lies in Les Cruots ou Vignes Blanches and Clos-Saint-Denis, together about a hectare, with vines averaging thirty years. Nicole Lamarche works with very low yields here and extracts gently, which is the source of the wine's reputation as one of the finer examples in the appellation. Jasper Morris has written that the cuvée has almost as much to offer as the domaine's Grands Echézeaux, the latter carrying more weight and power while this is particularly elegant in its lacy style. Dark berry fruit, floral perfume and subtle spice unfold across a finely textured palate.
Approachable after five years and will hold fifteen or more. Serve at 16-18°C with duck, venison or roast beef.
