Nicole Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 2023

Nicole Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes is fermented with thirty per cent whole bunches from vines of thirty to forty years.

Les Chaumes lies at the southern end of Vosne-Romanée, on the lower slope below La Tâche and Malconsorts, where deeper soils tend to give a rounder, more supple style of Vosne than the sites higher up the hill. Nicole Lamarche took over winemaking at the family domaine and has moved it towards a lighter touch: whole bunches used judiciously, gentle extraction and less new oak. Here about thirty per cent of the fruit was fermented with stems, which adds lift and structure without drying the fruit. She observes that this terroir gives her a wine reminiscent of her own Clos de Vougeot, which is high praise given how refined that Grand Cru is in her hands. The wine offers red cherry, wild strawberry and floral perfume framed by fine tannins and mineral freshness.

Approachable from three or four years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with duck, roast veal or mushroom risotto.
