Old Kempton Ex-Pinot Cask Single Malt Whisky 500ml

Old Kempton Ex-Pinot Cask Single Malt Whisky is a Tasmanian single malt matured in local Pinot Noir casks.

The Pinot casks behind this are the only wood in the program sourced entirely within Tasmania, coming from Frogmore Creek and Stefano Lubiana. Recoopering happens in Tasmania too: a light shave, a medium toast, then a heavy char. A handful of 20-litre casks in the mix quickens the exchange and brightens the result. The spirit underneath is the house wash, Tasmanian malted barley double distilled in copper pot stills, so what separates this from its stablemates is the wood alone. It belongs to the Classic Range, all of which is made in very small batches.

Rooibos-tea colour, then cherry and red fruit, nut brittle and a touch of rancio. Viscous in the mouth, with rounded barley, butterscotch, roasted hazelnut and musk, and a tannic hold on a long finish. Neat at room temperature; add water only if you want the malt pushed forward.
