Description
Olivier Leflaive Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from the great white grand cru of the Côte de Beaune, a band of vineyard wrapped around the hill of Corton.
Corton-Charlemagne runs across the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny, taking the upper slopes of the hill where the soil is paler and more marly and the aspect swings from south around to west. The name recalls the emperor Charlemagne, who by long tradition held land here and gave it to the Abbey of Saulieu in the eighth century. It is the largest white grand cru in Burgundy and among the slowest to come round, typically needing years in bottle before it shows its full scale. Olivier Leflaive, whose house was founded in Puligny-Montrachet in 1984, works with grand cru fruit from his own vines and from growers.
Best kept for five to ten years and served at around 12 degrees, alongside richer dishes such as lobster, veal or an aged hard cheese.
