Ornellaia Le Volte dell'Ornellaia IGT 2023

Ornellaia Le Volte dell'Ornellaia IGT is the approachable Tuscan red of the Bolgheri estate behind one of Italy's most collected wines.

Le Volte is the introductory wine of Ornellaia, the Bolgheri estate founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori and now in the hands of Marchesi Frescobaldi. Unlike the estate's Bolgheri bottlings it is released as Toscana IGT, which allows fruit from beyond the Bolgheri boundary and, unusually for the house, the inclusion of Sangiovese alongside the Bordeaux varieties. That combination is the point of the wine: the structure of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with the acidity and savour of Tuscany's own grape. Fermentation is parcel by parcel, and maturation is split between French oak barriques and neutral vessels over about ten months, which keeps the oak in the background and the wine ready to drink on release.

Serve at around 17 to 18 degrees with pasta al ragu, grilled meats or a plate of salumi and pecorino; it is made to be drunk within a few years rather than cellared.
