Pax Wines North Coast Syrah 2021

Pax Wines North Coast Syrah is a Californian Syrah blended from vineyards across Sonoma and Mendocino counties.

The blend shifts each year with conditions, though several of the sites that underpin the top Hillsides bottling always turn up in it. What separates this from the Sonoma Coast wine is reach: components can come from anywhere in Sonoma County and as far north as the rolling hills of Mendocino, making it a North Coast wine in the proper sense. Pax Mahle ferments with whole clusters, all of them, then ages the wine ten months in a mix of neutral French puncheon and concrete and bottles it unfiltered. Whole-bunch work and neutral vessels are the constants across his Syrah, and they are why these wines read as Northern Rhône cousins.

Intensely perfumed, with focussed dark fruit, black olive salinity, violet and pepper, and acidity that keeps it moving. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, with a decant. Good with lamb, grilled sausages, or roast vegetables and lentils.
