Pax Wines North Coast Syrah 2022

Pax Wines North Coast Syrah is a whole-cluster Syrah from North Coast California, drawn from sites across Sonoma and Mendocino.

This year's blend leans on Russell Ranch, Morris Ranch, Nellessen, Walker Vine Hill, Griffin's Lair and Castelli-Knight Ranch among others, each with a job to do: Castelli for high-toned spice and power, Nellessen for nerve and acidity, coastal Griffin's Lair for saline complexity, Walker Vine Hill for slow-ripened detail, and the Morris and Russell sites for depth and lively acid. The catchment stretches from Sonoma up into northern Mendocino, which is the whole point of the label. Pax Mahle fermented with whole clusters throughout, aged the wine ten months in neutral French puncheons and bottled it unfiltered. He rates it the best North Coast he has made.

Perfume first, violet and cracked pepper and black olive, then dark-fruited concentration held by fine acid and a saline finish. Decant and serve at 16 degrees. It handles roast lamb, duck sausages or a mushroom and barley braise.
