Pax Wines Sonoma Coast Syrah 2020

Pax Wines Sonoma Coast Syrah is a cool-climate Californian Syrah from coastal Sonoma vineyards.

There was no Hillsides in 2020. Pax Mahle declassified those barrels instead, and the wine that emerged became a new label, effectively a junior version of the flagship. He liked its spicy energy enough that what began as a one-off is now a fixture, fruit supply permitting. Contributions come from several Sonoma Coast AVA sites: the organically farmed, sandy Nellessen Vineyard, planted in 2000 west of Sebastopol in the Russian River Valley; Armagh, planted 1997 and farmed organically in the cool centre of the Petaluma Gap; and Griffin's Lair, also in the Gap, planted 1990 and organic. Winemaking mirrors the North Coast bottling, and the finished alcohol sits at 12.5 per cent.

Nervy and light on its feet for Syrah, with red and black fruit, pepper and a sea-spray salinity, and real freshness through the finish. Serve at 15 degrees. Try it with roast pork, grilled mackerel or lentils and sausage.
