Pax Wines Sonoma Coast Syrah 2021

Pax Wines Sonoma Coast Syrah is a low-alcohol Californian Syrah from organically farmed coastal sites.

Second release of a wine that began as a salvage operation: after a difficult 2020, Pax Mahle chose not to bottle his top Hillsides and put all his Sonoma Coast fruit into one new label instead. The 2021 runs across four coastal sites, each contributing something specific. Nellessen, sandy and organically farmed, planted in 2000 west of Sebastopol in the Russian River Valley, gives aromatic intensity. Armagh, in the cool centre of the Petaluma Gap and planted in 1997, brings a savoury edge. Majik, next door to Nellessen but facing north, adds pepper spice and umami. Griffin's Lair, also in the Gap and planted in 1990, finishes with marine salt. Alcohol sits at 12.5 per cent.

Aromatic and savoury together: black pepper, olive brine, dark berry and a marine tang running underneath. Medium-bodied, fresh and finely structured, with the low alcohol making it easy to keep drinking. Serve at 15 degrees with roast duck, lamb skewers or grilled eggplant and yoghurt.
