Pax Wines Sonoma Hillsides Syrah 2022

Pax Wines Sonoma Hillsides Syrah is a whole-cluster Syrah selected from the coolest hillside sites in Sonoma County.

Hillsides is a selection made after the fact: the best Syrah ferments of the year are identified, taken out of wood and married in a single concrete tank, a vessel Pax Mahle favours because it breathes less than oak, builds a dense core of fruit and keeps the wine reductive enough to hold sulphur low. The sites change annually but share high elevation, steep rocky ground and old vines in sandy soil. Walker Vine Hill in the Russian River Valley always anchors it, on Goldridge soil in a mesoclimate that traps coastal cool. Castelli-Knight Ranch brings spice and power, Nellessen supplies nerve and acid, and depth arrives from the Russell Ranch and Morris Ranch sites. No new wood is used.

Dense and highly perfumed, with violet, pepper, black olive and dark berry, mineral length and a tannin frame built for time. Decant, serve at 16 degrees, and give it lamb, beef rib or roast duck. It will keep developing for a decade and more.
