Philip Togni Vineyard Ca' Togni Sweet Red 375ml 2013

Philip Togni Vineyard Ca' Togni Sweet Red is a sweet red wine made from Black Hamburg grapes on Spring Mountain in Napa Valley.

The idea traces back to 1946, when Philip Togni hitchhiked from Venice to London carrying a two-litre flagon of sweet fortified white. Decades later, planting his Spring Mountain home site in the 1980s, he ran short of Cabernet vines and gave the last 39 to a little-known Muscat variety, Black Hamburg, meaning to make a sweet red to stand beside the Cape's Vin de Constance. At under half an acre it was Napa's only planting of the grape. Pierce's disease eventually decided the matter and the plot was replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon, so this is among the last of it. Fruit is picked very late and often shrivelled, 19.4 Baumé in 2013, macerated about a week for colour, pressed, then aged just under a year in very old oak.

Thick, dark and intensely sweet, with black cherry liqueur, rose and dried fig over a muscat lift, the residual sugar at 329g/L and alcohol at 14 per cent keeping it lively. Serve cool, around 12 degrees, in a small pour, with blue cheese or a flourless chocolate cake.
