Piero Busso Barbera d’Alba Majano 2020

Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Majano is the more fruit-forward of the estate's two Barberas, from a single vineyard in Neive.

Piero Busso works from Neive, in the eastern half of Barbaresco, and has built a reputation for site-driven, traditionally made Nebbiolo across a handful of small parcels. Both of his Barberas sit at the serious end of the variety, closer to the structured, ageworthy style than to the softer, more immediately seductive school. Majano lies at 190 metres on sandy clay, and the oldest vines in the parcel have reached fifty years, which brings unusual depth and vinosity for the appellation. The wine was matured for twelve months in stainless steel with no oak, a choice that keeps the fruit clear and the acidity, always Barbera's defining feature, front and centre. The result is dark-fruited and ferrous, with floral lift and real finesse alongside the depth.

Drinking well on release and good for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with tajarin al ragù, roast pork or a mushroom risotto.
