Description
Piero Busso Barbera d'Alba Stefanetto comes from mature vines in the San Stunet vineyard and is the deeper, more structured of the estate's two Barberas.
Piero Busso works from Neive, in the eastern half of Barbaresco, and has built a reputation for site-driven, traditionally made Nebbiolo across a handful of small parcels. Stefanetto sits at 380 metres in the village of Treiso, well above the estate's other holdings, on limestone-rich soils, and the vines range from 25 to 50 years old. Altitude, vine age and soil together give a Barbera with more grip and more length than the Majano cuvée from Neive. Accordingly the wine is raised for at least twelve months in neutral barrels of various sizes rather than tank, and it is held back an extra year before release. The style is fleshier and darker, with plummy fruit, wilder edges and powdery tannins.
Ready now and worth keeping six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with brasato, salumi and hard cheese, or a rich vegetable and lentil stew.
