Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah 2021

Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah is a Bendigo Syrah from granitic soils at Harcourt North.

First release from this site, where pure sandy granite and a mild climate set the place apart from the rest of the Bendigo zone. It can produce wines of considerable perfume and finesse, though the 2021 came in deeper and more structured, which is the season talking. Maturation stretched close to two years: twelve months in neutral wood from barrique up to 1,000 litres, then twelve in an unlined concrete tank. Bottling was late February 2023. Concrete for the second year is an unusual choice and part of why the wine holds its fruit so clearly.

Blackcurrant, anise, bay leaf and thyme, layered and perfumed, with a very long finish. Closer in feel to a top Morgon than to most Australian Shiraz. Serve at 16 degrees with lamb, roast duck or a dish of braised beans and greens.
