Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah 2022

Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah is a whole-bunch Syrah from the foothills of Mount Alexander.

Harcourt's second release comes off a specific plot in Victoria's Bendigo zone. Pure granite soils and a mild climate are why the team here rate it one of the country's more exciting addresses for the variety. Fifty per cent whole bunches went into the ferment. Maturation took nearly two years, beginning in older 600- and 1,500-litre Stockinger casks and finishing with eight months in a 2,000-litre Stockinger, before bottling in late December 2023. Large, seasoned wood is the house preference: it lets the granite character through without adding oak flavour of its own.

Perfume first, then depth: violet, blue fruit, cracked pepper and a mineral, granite-driven finish with fine structure beneath. Serve at 16 degrees. Lamb cutlets, grilled sausages or a roast eggplant and tahini plate all work well.
