Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah is a Heathcote Syrah given an extra year in cask before release.

The fruit comes from an east-facing plot of vines past twenty years of age, in the red Cambrian soil of the Mount Camel Range at Heathcote's northern end, a subregion that can turn out the district's most refined reds while still leaning towards power. That is why the extra year in wood is warranted. The 2021 spent its first year across Stockinger casks and concrete tank, then went into one 2,000-litre Stockinger for the remainder, and bottling came in the closing days of November 2023, 33 months after harvest. Only about 10 per cent new oak was involved anywhere.

A dark-fruited reading of a famous region, and at 13 per cent not remotely heavy: blackberry, graphite and dried herbs, with fine tannin and a fresh close. Decant, then serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Roast lamb, beef stew or a grilled mushroom plate.
