Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 2021

Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 is a Victorian Syrah blended from Heathcote and Harcourt fruit, built for the long haul.

The 2021 came together across a long, mild season, and the tannins it produced have more in common with Nebbiolo than with warm-climate Shiraz: firm, drying, insistent. Maturation stretched to sixteen months in a mix of mostly seasoned wood and concrete, then six months settling in steel tank before bottling in late February 2023. Rob Walters founded this Macedon Ranges estate after two decades importing the wines of Burgundy and the northern Rhône, and that background shows in the restraint. No new-oak varnish, no extraction for its own sake, just the structure of the site left intact.

Air is the friend of this bottle, so open it early and decant. Dark cherry, cracked pepper and dried herb arrive first, then a long savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees with slow-roasted lamb, braised beef cheek or a wedge of aged cheddar.
