Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 2022

Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 is a spicy, cool-climate Syrah, two-thirds Heathcote and one-third Harcourt.

Heathcote contributes 66 per cent of this blend and Harcourt the rest, the first grown on the ancient Cambrian soils of the Mount Camel Range, the second on pale granitic sand. Around 70 per cent whole bunches went into the ferments, and the wine spent its first year in casks, large Stockinger for the most part, before finishing its maturation in tank and going to bottle in late December 2023. It is the least expensive red in the range, which says nothing about how it is farmed or made. The intensity and the tannin here would carry a decade in the cellar.

Peppery and taut, with red and black berry fruit, dried thyme and a savoury, iron-like undertow. Drink it now or hold it. Sixteen degrees, decanted briefly, alongside barbecued lamb cutlets, duck sausages or eggplant baked with tomato and oregano.
