Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 2023

Place of Changing Winds Syrah No.2 is a medium-bodied Syrah from two Victorian blocks, at Heathcote and Harcourt.

Whole bunches dominated the 2023 ferments, and the wine was raised across a spread of vessels, mostly large and well-seasoned Stockinger casks with a concrete egg holding a portion, before bottling in February 2025. Rob Walters rates it the finest version of the label so far, and the evidence is in the perfume. The home estate sits in the Macedon Ranges, where the vines are planted at densities almost unheard of in Australia, while this bottling draws on grower blocks further north. It carries the smallest price tag in the range and none of the shortcuts that usually implies.

Violets and white pepper up front, then macerated red berries and a fine, powdery grip. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast pork belly, lamb kofta or a lentil and beetroot salad with goat's curd all work beside it.
