Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir 2020

Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir is a biodynamic single-block Pinot from the limestone slopes of North Canterbury.

Two Pinot Noir plots sit on the clay and limestone slopes at Waikari, and this is the cooler, more exposed one: steeply pitched, facing north, on shallow soils with less clay than its neighbour. That combination reads as aromatic lift in the glass, more floral and lighter on its feet, though the shape of the palate stays recognisably of the place. Farming has been biodynamic since the vines went in. The name comes from a folk word for yarrow, the plant behind preparation 502. Recent plantings of Chardonnay on the same soils suggest the team think it could do more than Pinot.

Rose petal, red cherry and wild herb, with a silky middle and fine savoury tannin. Fifteen degrees, in a big glass. Good with roast quail, seared salmon or a mushroom tart, and it has the acidity to handle beetroot and goat's cheese.
