Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir 2022

Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir is a single-parcel biodynamic Pinot Noir from the estate's Waikari property.

Planted in 2000 at 11,111 vines to the hectare, this 0.7-hectare plot occupies the southern tip of the estate: steep, north-facing, shallow and coarse underfoot, with only around 15 per cent clay. Huw Kinch puts the extra aromatic reach down to exactly that. Cellar work is deliberately identical to its sibling block, so any difference you taste is soil and aspect alone. Fruit was picked and sorted by hand, destemmed, then fermented by infusion instead of extraction, held three to four weeks on skins, matured eighteen months in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Steve Smith MW and his team have changed remarkably little since taking the property on.

Generous and complex, with red cherry, dried flowers and a mineral tension that keeps everything honest. The tannins are silky. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees after twenty minutes open. Duck breast, roast pork, or grilled mushrooms with thyme.
