Pyramid Valley Central Otago Manata Pinot Noir 2021

Pyramid Valley Central Otago Manata Pinot Noir is a Pinot from the estate's Lowburn vineyard, once known as Lowburn Ferry.

Jean and Roger Gibson planted this gentle north-facing slope in the Lowburn sub-region in 2000, a third of it on its own roots, and had national awards by 2003, which makes these among the older Pinot vines in Central Otago. Pyramid Valley bought the property in 2018 and installed biodynamic specialist Nick Paulin, who lives on site and manages it. Loess over deep silts, with lime deposits formed in the soil itself, gives the wine its chalk. Hand-picked fruit fermented on indigenous yeasts in open concrete and oak with 15 per cent whole bunches, then twelve months in French oak, a quarter new, and six months on light lees.

Plush dark berry fruit with the energy Otago does so well, wrapped in silky structure. It will age. Sixteen degrees, decanted half an hour. Venison, duck confit or slow-cooked lamb shoulder; a mushroom ragù works for the meat-free table.
