Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir 2016

Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir is a single-block biodynamic Pinot from the limestone slopes at Waikari.

The name is a country word for fumitory, a poppy relative that grows happily in this 0.85-hectare plot. The vines run down an expansive east-facing slope on the richer of the estate's two Pinot soils, with more limestone beneath and strong, well-structured clay above. Picked later than its sibling block, it usually gives the darker and firmer of the pair: more fruit weight, tannins that are fine but present. Mike and Claudia Weersing planted these slopes at very high density from 2000 onwards and farmed biodynamically from the outset, and the vineyard has been worked that way ever since.

Ten years in, the fruit has turned to dark cherry and plum preserve with undergrowth, dried orange peel and spice behind it. The tannins have melted. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast lamb, a mushroom and chestnut pie, or a mature comté.
