Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Chardonnay 2020

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Chardonnay is a regional Chardonnay from two Waipara vineyards.

Two sources make this wine. At Waipara Springs, Mendoza-clone vines went into the ground between 1982 and 1986, which puts them among the oldest Chardonnay in New Zealand, while the clone 5 component comes from the granite-rich Three Sisters vineyard. Fruit was hand-picked, fermented on wild yeasts and aged twelve months in French oak with a fifth of it new, then settled in tank and left a further four months on lees before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The approach is the one applied to the single-block wines at Waikari, used at a more generous scale and a friendlier price.

Ripe stone fruit and citrus with a nutty, toasty edge and North Canterbury's saline finish. Mouth-filling but not heavy. Serve at 12 degrees. Roast chicken, pork chops with apple, or a bowl of mussels in cream and leek.
