Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Chardonnay 2021

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Chardonnay is a Chardonnay blended from old-vine and younger Waipara parcels.

Old Mendoza vines on the Omihi clays of Waipara Springs, planted between 1982 and 1986, supply the depth; clone 5 and more Mendoza from the Three Sisters vineyard on Mackenzies Road, planted on Rangitata gravels in 2001 and 2002, supply the cut. Harvest ran by hand between 12 and 23 March. The must fermented with indigenous yeasts and spent twelve months in French oak, 20 per cent of it new, then four months settling on light lees in stainless steel, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Huw Kinch's touch across the range is consistently light, and this is where it can be seen most cheaply.

Reductive and toasty on opening, then ripe stone fruit, hazelnut and grilled almond over a mouth-filling structure with the region's salinity underneath. Anyone who drinks white Burgundy will recognise the shape. Twelve degrees, with roast chicken, veal, or a gruyère tart.
