Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2019

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir is a regional Pinot blended from four vineyards across Waipara and Omihi.

Four sites make up the 2019: the northernmost vineyard on the Omihi Saddle, planted on Omihi clay, and three in Waipara, being Top Block on the so-called Golden Mile, Three Sisters on Rangitata gravels, and the Porters family vineyard on Domett clay. Each brings something different, which is the argument for a regional blend in a district as geologically mixed as this one. Hand-picked fruit fermented on vineyard yeasts in open-top vessels with 30 per cent whole bunches, aged eleven months in French barrels with a fifth new, then four months in stainless steel on light lees. Sealed under screwcap.

High-definition and mouth-filling, with red cherry, plum and a round, plush tannin that gives it weight, finishing savoury. Serve at 16 degrees. Duck, roast lamb, or mushrooms and polenta; it is also one of the few Pinots that copes with a barbecue.
