Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2020

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir is a four-vineyard regional Pinot from Waipara and Omihi.

The same four vineyards underpin the 2020, being the high Omihi Saddle site, Top Block on the Golden Mile, Three Sisters and Porters, but the vintage produced something tighter and more coiled than the estate's Central Otago bottling. Hand-picked fruit fermented naturally in open-top vessels with a quarter whole bunches, then aged twelve months in French barrels, a fifth of them new, and settled a further six months on fine lees in tank. Waipara's long dry autumns let Pinot hang until the tannins are properly ripe, and the cool nights keep the acidity where it needs to be.

Sappy perfume, pure red fruit, bramble and a lick of blue fruit, with powdery tannin and discreet oak. It is coiled, so decant it. Sixteen degrees. Roast duck, venison sausages, or a mushroom and lentil pie.
