Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2021

Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir is an unfined, unfiltered regional Pinot from three Waipara vineyards.

Three vineyards in 2021: Three Sisters on Mackenzies Road, planted on Rangitata gravels; the Porters family vineyard nearby, planted in 2004 on east-facing Domett clay; and the vineyard at the Springs, planted in the early 1980s on Omihi clay and home to some of the oldest vines in the district. Hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts in open-top vessels with 20 per cent whole bunches, aged twelve months in French oak with a fifth new, then six months on light lees in stainless steel. Pyramid Valley leases and manages that old Omihi site, which is why its fruit turns up right across the range.

Layered aromatics, with red plum pit, florals, spice and dried herb, over a deep silky palate of plums and liquorice with plush tannin, tapering to a long savoury finish. Sixteen degrees, decanted twenty minutes. Serve with duck, lamb rump or a mushroom ragù.
