Quealy Balnarring Pinot Grigio 2021

Quealy Balnarring Pinot Grigio is a dry Pinot Grigio from two vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula's coastal flats.

Two sites feed this bottling, the Hester vineyard and the Campbell and Christine, both a short drive from the winery, which matters when you are picking white grapes on a warm morning. Pressing is by whole bunch and only the gentlest stretch of the cycle is kept, so the juice yield per tonne is low by any commercial standard. It settles overnight with no sulphur added. A fifth spent four weeks in François Frères puncheons, partly to take the edge off those barrels before the Pinot Noir goes in, then rejoined the stainless-steel portion. Kathleen Quealy and Kevin McCarthy effectively introduced Australia to serious Grigio, and this is the house benchmark.

Nashi pear, lemon and white flowers, with a pulpy texture and a dry, faintly saline finish, a long way from the neutral version of this grape. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. Good with prawns, salt-and-pepper squid, or a plate of prosciutto and melon.
