Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir 2019

Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot from the coastal flats behind Balnarring.

Two doctors, Campbell and Christine Penfold, planted this vineyard in 1994, mostly to MV6 with some of the 114 and 115 selections that had just become available. It sits at only 30 metres above sea level behind Balnarring village, facing north and fully exposed, on alluvial clay and red soils washed down off Red Hill. Tom McCarthy says the site gives gorgeous small bunches of glossy fruit, and the crop was held under two tonnes to the acre. Only free-run juice was settled and racked to 500-litre puncheons, roughly a quarter of them new. Unusually for this producer, about 30 per cent whole bunches went into two ferments.

The whole-bunch portion shows as spice and a longer, more extended palate shape over fleshy dark cherry fruit. Tannins are ripe and fine. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast duck, lamb loin, or a mushroom and pancetta risotto.
