Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir 2020

Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.

One of three leased Peninsula vineyards that Quealy treats as its premier league, this block was established in 1994 by the Penfolds, both of them doctors, and is mainly MV6 with a little 114 and 115. The location is unusual for fine Pinot: the coastal plain behind Balnarring village, just 30 metres up, north-facing and exposed to whatever comes off the bay, on alluvial clay and red soils carried down from Red Hill. Crop is held under two tonnes to the acre, and only free-run juice was kept, settled and racked into 500-litre puncheons with about a quarter new.

Dark cherry and plum with a glossy, concentrated core, savoury spice and tannins that carry weight without drying out the finish. Sixteen degrees, decanted briefly. It suits duck, roast pork with fennel, beef fillet with mushrooms, or a dish of braised lentils.
